Move ‘speriments

What if workouts were work-it-outs?

My son has always joined in my movement classes. Monkey see, monkey do and all that. And somewhere along the way, they came to be known as ‘speriments’, cos all life’s an experiment and an experience. I loved it and it’s stuck.

‘Speriments are the ability to tolerate loads and generate forces in various angles as well as being ready for the unknown. And that’s the exciting part. We have to ‘practice’ to be ready. You have to be who you are and so you have to be the best at who you are, so the harder you work the luckier you’ll be, and when the opportunity does come, you’re ready for it, not floundering, just feeling capable for as long as possible and available to all the opportunities that come to you! I see this all the time in client’s ‘a-ha’ moments - my 85yo resurgent soccer ‘prodigy’, a 40yo balance superstar who added juggling while balancing on an exercise ball, a mid-50s gent who ‘worked-out’ how to get up off the floor cross legged twist and go back down like it was no thing that he now in his 60s relishes as he plays with his new grandchildren on their floor whenever they want. These are all great feats for anybody and any age but the looks on each of their faces, the surprise to realisation to joy only they could feel and share with me, is something I would strive to see again and again in my life.

If you’ve worked with Fitbynature you’ll recognise phrases like ‘it all adds up’, ‘it’s not just working hard but working on the right things’ and ‘you have to move energy to make it (or an object in motion stays in motion)’. Actually the last two there were coined by Newton, truly tried and tested, so probably a good way to go! But most importantly is that it’s all about your adding up, your right things (and your hard for that matter) and your moves. It’s the data you collect on yourself. All we can know is our own data. We spend 24hours a day with ourselves for goodness sake! You know you best, you need to do you.

Maybe we can’t solve world health and we can only do small things. But maybe my small things might join other small things (just like these shared almost disbelieving moments!) might join other small things and together grow into something bigger. Even really big. Then spill out into others and eventually right back to my family so we can again spill over our small wins again and again.
