It starts with breakfast

The one thing you can do to improve how you feel. 

Do you drink coffee or tea to perk yourself up? Oh wait doesn’t everybody! Ok, does your energy vary a lot over the course of a day? Do you tend to crash mid-morning or mid-afternoon? Do you regularly wake up in the middle of the night? Do you feel shaky, irritable or anxious if you go too long without eating? These are signs of unstable blood-sugar levels, which have an enormous impact on health and well-being. 

Unstable blood sugar is one of the most common causes of fatigue, mood swings, hormone disruption, food cravings, weight gain, adrenal fatigue and sleep disturbances. And it’s quite easy to prevent. If you are going to do ONE thing to improve how you feel, stabilizing your blood sugar should be it.

Are you riding the blood sugar roller coaster? 

We’re told a healthy breakfast begins with a bowl of cereal, which is refined sugar
and carbs, to which we add low-fat milk, which has a higher glycaemic index than regular milk (and it’s digest-ability is processed out with the fat, which only adds more problems). Or perhaps a piece of toast (refined carbs) with margarine (man-made trans fats mean trans cells in our bodies!), both of which will definitely cause a blood sugar emergency.

We begin the blood sugar roller coaster (cos what goes up must come down!) each day at breakfast because for most of us, it’s all about refined sugars and carbs. And that’s stressful for our bodies, especially our brains, which do not like blood sugar changes up or down. Add to that we’re pretty stressed at breakfast anyway, eaten in a rush with so much in the day yet to do. Stress is a sympathetic state for our brain, which incidentally switches off digestion!

Challenge yourself this week to fight the blood sugar roller coaster from breakfast on: ‘treat’ yourself with a weekday bacon and eggs, try getting a sneaky veggie or two in at more than three weekday breakies, and if you gotta toast it, get a great gf version, slather in grass fed butter and homemade pate and much a raw carrot. Even if you only do one thing in this challenge, make it variety: even the same healthiest meal daily is just like sugar to your body!

At breaky, your body is ready for more than sugar!
